The Tierra Fria Leadership Program: Providing scholarships and mentoring for indigenous Guatemalan
teenage girls. This program addresses issues of education, empowerment and civic leadership within
a context that affirms the cultural and psycho-social needs of the participants in a national context
of racism and violence. We believe that by creating an opportunity for adolescent girls of Mayan descent
to have access to formal schooling, as well as critical literacy and leadership training, we will be supporting
the small but important advances in indigenous women's participation made since the 1993 Peace Accords ended Guatemala's
devastating 30 year civil war.
We anticipate this program will begin in December 2003
