Global Children was incorporated in September 2000 and soon thereafter federally
recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Thanks to generous support in
our first few months we began the Cambodia Orphanage~Performing Arts Program in
November, followed shortly thereafter by our second project, the Environmental
Awareness and Hygiene Education Program.
I first traveled to Cambodia in 1990 at the age of seventeen. My initial exposure
to Cambodian culture was in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital city, where I spent most of
my three week trip visiting a number of orphanages. But it was at the Nutrition Center
Orphanage that I fell in love with the children of Cambodia. It was their happiness,
despite their desperate situation, and their incredible resiliency that stole my heart.
I continue to find this loving spirit in all the children I meet. These children kept me
traveling back to Cambodia wanting to be a small part of their lives, to photograph their
situation and to lend a small helping hand whenever I could.
Ten years later I founded Global Children and it was only fitting that our first
project be at an orphanage. Kompong Speu Orphanage is located thirty miles from Phnom
Penh. The Orphanage Performing Arts Program is working with a group of thirty children
teaching them traditional Khmer Pin Piet music and Khmer Apsara dance. The children
have blossomed as artists and have developed a strong sense of pride in their skills.
Global Children has three Cambodian staff who run the programs in Cambodia.
Their incredible passion for assisting Khmer children in need is inspiring and their
dedication to ensuring that our programs are culturally appropriate essential.
Without the support of our donors and volunteers the work we do would not be
possible. I hope that you have a strong sense that your participation is priceless
and that your contributions provide the children in our programs with a precious
opportunity.
